Living in Freedom

We talk about freedom frequently in our faith communities. We sing powerful worship songs about chains breaking, we read scriptures declaring that we have been set entirely free, and we listen to sermons about the abundant life Jesus came to provide. Yet, if we are completely honest with ourselves, our daily reality often feels much more like captivity than liberation. We walk through our days carrying heavy, invisible chains of anxiety, comparison, people-pleasing, and lingering shame from our past mistakes.

You might profoundly love the Lord, serve faithfully in your local community, and read your Bible every single morning, while still feeling entirely stuck in cycles you cannot seem to break. You might find yourself reacting to minor frustrations with sudden bursts of unexplained anger. You might shrink back from incredible opportunities because a quiet voice constantly whispers that you are simply not qualified. You desperately want to experience the soaring freedom you read about in scripture, but you feel anchored to the ground by habits and mindsets you cannot seem to shake.

The beautiful, challenging truth is that Christ has already accomplished the work of your freedom on the cross. The prison door has been completely unlocked, and the chains have been officially broken. However, living in freedom requires you to actively choose to walk out of the cell. It requires you to stop making agreements with the lies that have kept you bound and start aligning your mind, your habits, and your daily choices with the absolute truth of God's Word.

Stylized realistic landscape (16:9) image of a diverse group of women walking out of a dim hallway into bright daylight through open doors. The transition from shadow to light should be clear but not overly symbolic. One woman is mid-step into the light, posture upright and free. Subtle broken chain link on the floor near the doorway (small, not dramatic). Hopeful, empowering mood; cinematic lighting; no religious imagery.

The Invisible Chains We Carry

When we think of spiritual bondage, we often picture dramatic, obvious struggles. We think of severe addictions or massive moral failures. But for most of us, bondage is incredibly subtle. It creeps into our lives quietly, masking itself as responsibility, self-protection, or even spiritual diligence. Because these chains are invisible and often socially acceptable, we can carry them for decades without ever realizing we are actually living in captivity.

Identifying Your Specific Bondage

To step into freedom, you must first be willing to accurately identify what is holding you back. Bondage often looks like perfectionism—the exhausting, relentless drive to prove your worth by never making a single mistake. It looks like the fear of man, where you constantly modify your behavior and silence your authentic voice to keep everyone around you comfortable. It looks like chronic worry, where you use anxiety as a false shield to try and control the unpredictable future.

These behaviors feel entirely normal because our culture actually applauds them. We praise the woman who perfectly curates her life, we celebrate the employee who completely sacrifices her boundaries, and we validate the mother who worries obsessively. But heaven does not applaud these things. Heaven recognizes them as heavy burdens that slowly suffocate the beautiful, unique purpose God has placed inside of you.

The Comfort of Familiar Cages

One of the most profound reasons we stay stuck in bondage is simply because the cage feels familiar. We deeply crave safety and predictability. Even if a mindset is toxic and exhausting, we often prefer the predictable pain of our current situation over the terrifying uncertainty of genuine change. Stepping into freedom requires you to leave the comfort of what you have always known. It means learning entirely new ways of responding to stress, handling conflict, and viewing your own worth. You have to be willing to be wildly uncomfortable for a season in order to break the cycle permanently.

What True Spiritual Freedom Actually Means

Before we can effectively fight for our freedom, we have to completely redefine what the word means. Modern culture defines freedom as the absolute right to do whatever you want, whenever you want, without any consequences or restrictions. But biblical freedom operates on an entirely different plane.

Escaping the Performance Trap

True spiritual freedom is the profound realization that you absolutely do not have to perform for your Creator. It is the liberating understanding that your worth was entirely secured on the cross, not on your daily checklist of accomplishments. When you are truly free, you can serve others, build your business, and love your family out of a deep well of joyful overflow, rather than an exhausting place of desperate obligation. You stop trying to earn a love you already fully possess.

The Power of Holy Surrender

Paradoxically, the ultimate freedom is found in complete surrender to God. When you are the boss of your own life, you carry the crushing responsibility of making sure everything works out perfectly. You have to manipulate circumstances, manage people's perceptions, and constantly hustle to secure your future. But when you surrender control to the Father, that heavy burden completely lifts off your shoulders. You realize you are securely held by a God who manages the universe flawlessly. You are free to simply show up, do your best, and leave the complex outcomes entirely in His capable hands.

Breaking the Silent Agreements We Make with Lies

Bondage never begins with an action; it always begins with a thought. The enemy does not have the power to force you to do anything, but he does have the ability to whisper insidious lies into your mind. When you accept those lies as the truth, you form a silent agreement. That agreement is the exact mechanism that locks the chains securely around your heart.

Exposing the Enemy's Whispers

The lies we believe are highly personalized. The enemy studies your specific insecurities and customizes his whispers to hit your most vulnerable places. He tells the ambitious woman that her worth is only tied to her productivity. He tells the weary mother that she is permanently damaging her children. He tells the woman with a painful past that she is completely disqualified from a beautiful future. These whispers sound exactly like your own voice, which is why they are so incredibly difficult to detect.

To break these agreements, you must become aggressively observant of your internal monologue. You have to stop passively accepting every thought that floats through your mind. When a thought brings deep shame, paralyzing fear, or intense condemnation, you can immediately identify its source. God never uses shame to correct His children. He uses gentle, loving conviction. If the voice is condemning, it is not from heaven, and you have the absolute authority to reject it.

Replacing Deception with Absolute Truth

You cannot fight a lie with empty positive thinking. Telling yourself "I am enough" is helpful, but it is not a strong enough weapon to break spiritual strongholds. You must fight the lie with the solid, unchanging truth of scripture. When the enemy whispers that you are abandoned, you must declare out loud that God has promised to never leave you or forsake you. When the lie says you are a failure, you must declare that you are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. You have to actively overwrite the faulty programming in your mind with the exact words your Creator speaks over you.

The Vital Role of Forgiveness in Your Deliverance

You cannot walk in complete spiritual freedom while fiercely clutching a heavy bag of resentment. Unforgiveness is one of the most deceptive forms of bondage because it often feels entirely justified. When someone deeply hurts you, betrays your trust, or damages your life, holding onto anger feels like a protective shield. You believe that maintaining your resentment will somehow hold the other person accountable for their actions.

Releasing the Debts of Others

Harboring unforgiveness does not punish the person who hurt you; it completely imprisons you. It ties your emotional well-being to someone who has already proven themselves to be unsafe. True freedom requires the incredibly painful, beautiful work of releasing the debt. Forgiveness does not mean you excuse their toxic behavior, and it absolutely does not require you to allow them back into your inner circle. It simply means you choose to evict them from the space they have been occupying in your mind. You hand the scales of justice entirely over to God and refuse to let someone else's poor choices dictate your current peace.

The Courage to Forgive Yourself

For many faith-driven women, the hardest person to forgive is the woman staring back at them in the mirror. You might readily extend grace to your friends, your spouse, and your children, while holding yourself to a completely impossible standard of perfection. You replay your past mistakes on a continuous loop, punishing yourself for decisions you made when you were hurting, confused, or lacking wisdom.

God has already cast your confessed sins as far as the east is from the west. If the Creator of the universe has chosen to completely forgive and forget your past, who are you to demand that it be remembered? Clinging to your own guilt is a form of spiritual pride. It is time to bravely drop the heavy stone of self-condemnation. You cannot step boldly into your new season while you are constantly looking backward to punish yourself for the old one.

Overcoming the Fear of What People Think

One of the thickest, most suffocating chains we wear is the intense fear of what other people think of us. We live in an era of constant surveillance and immediate feedback. We are conditioned to carefully curate our lives for public consumption, measuring our exact worth by likes, comments, and external validation.

The Prison of Public Opinion

When you base your decisions on the potential opinions of others, you become a complete prisoner to an audience that is perpetually changing its mind. You say yes to commitments you hate because you want to appear helpful. You stay quiet in important meetings because you fear being labeled aggressive. You hide your authentic struggles because you desperately want to maintain the illusion of having it all together. This constant shape-shifting is deeply exhausting and entirely unsustainable. It separates you from the unique, beautiful identity God specifically crafted for you.

Shifting Your Audience to One

Living in freedom means intentionally shifting your audience. You stop trying to perform for the crowd and start living for an audience of One. When you intimately know that the Father is already entirely pleased with you, the criticism of a stranger or the disapproval of a peer instantly loses its power. You can boldly follow the Holy Spirit's leading, even when it completely confuses the people around you. You can set firm boundaries without apologizing, and you can show up authentically in your relationships without fear of rejection. Your worth is anchored to the Rock, not floating on the shifting waves of human opinion.

Guarding Your Newly Found Spiritual Territory

Breaking free from bondage is an incredible milestone, but staying free requires intense, daily vigilance. When you reclaim territory from the enemy, he does not simply walk away and leave you alone forever. He will wait for a moment of weakness, exhaustion, or stress, and he will attempt to hand you the exact same chains you just took off.

Establishing Unapologetic Boundaries

To protect your freedom, you must establish strong, unapologetic boundaries. Freedom does not mean you have infinite capacity. You must guard your schedule, protect your emotional energy, and carefully monitor the inputs you allow into your mind. If a specific relationship consistently pulls you back into old habits of gossip or comparison, you have the right to create distance. If scrolling through a certain social media app immediately triggers deep anxiety or feelings of lack, you must ruthlessly delete the app. Your peace is your most valuable asset, and you must protect it fiercely.

Staying Closely Tethered to the Vine

The ultimate key to living in freedom is staying closely tethered to Jesus. You cannot maintain your deliverance in your own human strength. The moment you drift away from daily intimacy with Him, you become highly susceptible to the old lies and the familiar cages. Make daily communication with the Father your highest priority. Worship Him in the quiet moments of your morning. Saturate your mind with His Word. When you stay firmly attached to the Vine, His supernatural life, peace, and freedom flow directly into your spirit, empowering you to walk confidently in the abundant life He promised.

Stepping Out of the Boat

Your freedom is not just for you. God wants to completely heal your heart, break your chains, and renew your mind so that you can become a brilliant, shining light to the women around you who are still living in captivity. Your deliverance is a powerful testimony that gives others permission to seek their own healing.

Leaving the Shore of Safety

It is time to step out of the boat. It is time to leave the familiar shores of anxiety, the comfortable cages of perfectionism, and the heavy burdens of past mistakes. The water might look incredibly terrifying, and the wind might be loud, but the Savior is standing on the waves, gently calling your name.

Walking on the Water of Faith

Take a deep breath and take the very first step. Choose today to stop agreeing with the lies. Choose today to forgive the person who hurt you. Choose today to trust that God's grace is actually massive enough to cover your story. You were created for wide-open spaces. You were designed to live with a light, unburdened heart. Embrace the magnificent truth of who you are in Christ, and boldly step into the beautiful, unapologetic freedom that is rightfully yours.

Scripture Anchor

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." — Galatians 5:1 (NIV)

Journaling Prompt

What is one specific "familiar cage" or invisible chain you have been voluntarily carrying (such as people-pleasing, perfectionism, or chronic worry)? Write down exactly how this habit is limiting your current spiritual growth, and describe what it would practically look like to hand it over to God today.

Do This Today (5 Minutes)

  1. Identify the heavy lie: Take one minute to sit quietly and name a specific, recurring negative thought that frequently brings you feelings of shame, anxiety, or condemnation.

  2. Sever the agreement: Physically shake your head "no" to disrupt the mental loop, signaling to your brain that you are no longer accepting this lie as your reality.

  3. Declare your freedom: Say aloud, "Lord, I break my agreement with the lie of [insert struggle here]. I claim the absolute freedom Jesus paid for, and I choose to anchor my mind entirely to Your truth today."

A Note from Kelley

Friend, I know exactly how exhausting it is to love the Lord fiercely while simultaneously feeling completely weighed down by invisible chains. For a long time, I wore the heavy burden of perfectionism like a badge of honor, secretly believing that my constant striving was keeping my world from falling apart. I was so terrified of disappointing God and others that I entirely missed the breathtaking freedom Jesus had already purchased for me. The day I finally realized I didn't have to perform for my worth was the day my actual life began. I traded my exhausting hustle for His gentle grace, and the relief was indescribable. You do not have to stay in that familiar cage one second longer. God is inviting you into wide-open spaces today. Let’s commit to dropping the heavy baggage of our past and bravely stepping into the beautiful, unburdened freedom He has prepared for us.

With grace and courage,

Kelley
